John & Lacey’s Traditional Traveller Wedding | St. Joseph’s Presbytery Birkenhead & Runcorn Town Hall
Some weddings stay with you for a long time, not just because of the beautiful photographs, but because of the people, the atmosphere and the genuine warmth that surrounds the day. John & Lacey’s wedding was one of those occasions.
From the moment I arrived at St. Joseph’s Presbytery in Birkenhead, it was clear this was going to be a very special celebration. Their wedding was centred around the traditional values that are so important within the Traveller community — family, respect, loyalty, faith and togetherness. These values could be seen in every part of the day, from the support of their families to the pride and love shared by everyone who attended.
A Beautiful Ceremony at St. Joseph’s Presbytery
The ceremony itself was full of emotion and tradition. St. Joseph’s Presbytery provided a wonderful setting, with its beautiful church interior creating a timeless backdrop for John & Lacey as they exchanged their vows.
One of the things I love most about photographing weddings is capturing the moments that happen naturally — the proud smiles from parents, the laughter between siblings, the reassuring glances between the couple and the joyful reactions from guests. John & Lacey’s ceremony was filled with these genuine moments, and they are the photographs that will mean even more as the years go by.
Traditional Values at the Heart of the Day
Traveller weddings are often known for their strong sense of family connection and tradition, and this wedding was a perfect example of that. There was a real sense that this was not just about two people getting married, but about two families coming together to celebrate something truly meaningful.
The importance placed on respect for family, commitment to marriage and celebrating with loved ones created such a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the entire day. As a documentary-style wedding photographer, these authentic interactions are exactly what I aim to preserve — the real relationships and emotions that tell the true story of the wedding.
Relaxed Portraits at Runcorn Town Hall
After the ceremony, we travelled to Runcorn Town Hall for their post-wedding portraits. I have photographed many weddings at Runcorn Town Hall over the years, and it remains one of my favourite locations in Cheshire for relaxed couple photographs.
The beautiful gardens, elegant architecture and quieter surroundings allowed John & Lacey to take a few moments away from the celebrations and simply enjoy being newly married. My approach is always to keep portraits natural and pressure-free, giving gentle guidance while encouraging couples to interact with each other rather than focus on the camera.
The result was a collection of photographs that reflected their personalities perfectly — relaxed, happy and completely themselves.
A Personal Connection That Made the Day Even More Special
This wedding was particularly meaningful for me because I had previously photographed Lacey’s sister’s wedding a few years ago. Being invited back to photograph another wedding for the same family is one of the greatest compliments I can receive as a wedding photographer.
When couples recommend me to their brothers, sisters and close family members, it tells me that the experience I provide is just as important as the photographs themselves. Building those long-term relationships and becoming a familiar face at family celebrations is something I genuinely value.
It was wonderful to see familiar faces again and to feel so warmly welcomed by everyone throughout the day.
Capturing the Real Story
Looking back at John & Lacey’s wedding, what stands out most is the love, laughter and strong family bonds that were present from beginning to end. These are the moments that matter far more than posed perfection, and they are the moments I always strive to capture.
